The tiny version

Sit comfortably for one minute and stop doing one extra thing.

When to try it

Exhausted, Overstimulated, Overwhelmed.

Start with five quiet minutes. Stay longer if it suits you.

What you need to hear

Rest is the thing you’re doing. It does not need to be followed immediately by something impressive.

Try this

  1. Choose a manageable pause and tell anyone who needs to know: “I’m taking ten minutes. I’ll be back after that.”

  2. Lower one source of noise or distraction. A comfortable chair or a spot on the sofa counts.

  3. If a bath appeals, use comfortably warm water. Plain water is enough. Use any bath product according to its label and choose products you know suit you.

  4. Notice the chair supporting you or the water around you. Let your breathing stay easy. Soften your jaw or hands if that feels comfortable.

Afterwards

Have something to eat or drink if you need it.

Keep one nonessential job off your list for a little longer.

Journal prompt

What am I trying to earn before I allow myself to rest?

Keep it comfortable

If you feel faint, unwell or too hot in a bath, get out safely. Candles are optional and must never be left unattended.
